Cwmsymlog - Spirit of the Miners

Trefeurig 1841 Census

In the 16th century the silver and lead mines were founded at Cwmsymlog, the most productive in Britain at one time. The remains of the old lead mines are still to be seen at Cwmsymlog, Cwmerfyn, Bancydarren, Bryn-llwyd (Llechwedd-hen), Pen-y-cefn and other places. The industry declined from around 1880 and came to an end at the beginning of the 20th century. The lakes of Pen-dam, Melindwr, Syfydrin and others were created in order to provide power for the lead mines.
